About Stamford Academy

Founded in 2005, Stamford Academy is a small, family-owned and run language school located in the heart of Stamford, a beautiful stone town situated 100 miles north of London. The Academy specialises in providing English language courses for international students and Modern Language courses such as French, Spanish, Italian, German and Dutch.

Teachers at Stamford Academy are all qualified in their respective fields and each has a minimum of two years’ teaching experience. The school’s directors have many years’ experience working and teaching in the world of education and have each travelled extensively and studied languages overseas.

Our directors have a broad, in-depth knowledge of this sector gained through senior management positions in long-established UK language schools, international examination boards and large examination centres, all of which helps us to provide our students with a quality language learning experience.

he Academy itself is situated on Stamford’s pedestrianised High Street, and has four purpose-built classrooms, each able to accommodate twelve students, though our classes are limited to ten or fewer. We strongly believe that small class sizes are essential for students of any subject to fully engage in, and benefit from, the learning experience.

Our General English course runs from September to June each year.

The main aim of the course is to help students build the confidence needed to communicate clearly and effectively with English-speaking people from all over the world.

Our teachers use learning materials from a wide range of paper and digital sources to make sure that lessons are interesting and varied, helping students to develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills both in and out of the classroom.

We believe that small class sizes are essential to learning English so all of our General English classes have 10 students or fewer to make sure you receive the attention you need to achieve your learning objectives faster.

General English – Part Time:

Our Part-time English course runs from September to June and is intended for people who live and work in and around the Stamford area. Stamford Academy has a long history of running subsidised English courses for au-pairs and local residents whose first language is not English. In 2014, all external funding for this type of course was withdrawn. However, the directors at Stamford Academy have decided to continue to provide a Part-time course for eligible students at a subsidised annual and termly rate.

Stamford Varsity
To succeed in UK education at a sixth form college, university or working in partnership with businesses requiring a good knowledge of English, a key skill is being able to think and express yourself analytically in English. A good grasp of cultural awareness and knowing how to integrate with your peers is also of significant importance. This is often overlooked by many as being something that can be easily picked up, however, years of experience in supporting internationals wanting to improve both their education and job prospects have proved that having lessons in cultural awareness and etiquette are essential.

From January 2016, Stamford Academy is offering two new courses, which give equal emphasis in both areas. Each course will focus on the specific needs of participants and include opportunities to visit places of cultural significance. In addition, visits will be arranged to relevant companies or businesses on the Professional course and to schools, colleges or universities on the Academic Course.

Each course lasts 20 weeks, 25 hours per week contact time plus 10 hours per week directed learning.
Minimum level CEFR B1
Minimum age 16, maximum class size 10

This course is designed for active teenage students who like to work hard and play hard.

We realise that for many teenage students, this will be their first visit to the UK, and their first opportunity to use English in a ‘live’ setting. For this reason, the academic part of the course has two main aims:

to build confidence, vocabulary and fluency inside the classroom
to practise English in a variety of realistic (supervised) situations with native speakers outside of the classroom.
The course’s activity programme aims to build students’ confidence, social skills and cultural awareness by:

Learning about British culture in a safe, traditional English setting
Improving and practising English language skills and spoken fluency with native speakers
Building leadership and team-working skills in small groups with classmates
Taking part in a range of adventurous, supervised, outdoor activities and excursions

Summer Shakespeare:
The course will be discussion-based, each session being introduced and led by experienced tutors who will have access to a wide range of stimulating audio/visual resources to illustrate the themes being explored. There will be 2 discussion sessions, each session lasting 1.5 hours, on four mornings each week of the course.

Discussion will focus on teasing out central themes developed in Shakespeare’s work, his use of language and dramatic devices, as well as those aspects of life in Elizabethan England which provided the context for and key influences on his writing. Art, music, fashion and architecture will be examined alongside the political and religious turmoil of the time, the opportunities for trade, and everyday life in both town and country.
This is a course for those who love the plays and sonnets of Shakespeare and who also wish to explore the social, political, economic and artistic background against which they were written.

All students will be expected to have an advanced level of spoken English if they are to benefit fully from the course. Each participant will receive a course programme prior to arrival which will give details of the plays to be seen on excursions.
