About SERC - South Eastern Regional College
Our aim is to provide a motivating, stimulating, active learning environment. By blending a face-to-face approach with web-based interactive learning, we use a range of techniques and resources to help you improve your language proficiency. Our classes are small, with an average of 10 students per course. All students are encouraged to build a portfolio of learning as well as to demonstrate independent learning.
The college has a friendly and dynamic environment with a strong reputation for excellence in teaching and learning. All courses are delivered by qualified and experienced teachers in purpose-built facilities with large classrooms, a learning resource centre and café and coffee bar and local sports facilities.
Our students are at the heart of our teaching and learning and we want to support all our students to achieve their goals. Whether you want to find a new job and improve employability, be able to communicate easily in the local community, to work towards British Citizenship or develop your English language for future study, we have a range of courses to meet your needs.
The SERC English Language Teaching team offer English courses in our six main campuses. We also work with businesses and organisations in County Antrim and County Down providing off-site teaching. We offer general English and specialised English programmes for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).
We work closely with the SERC IELTS Test Centre with a choice of IELTS Preparation classes and Pre-University English programmes.

IELTS Preparation CLasses
The IELTS Preparation Courses are designed to train you for the IELTS examination and help you to achieve your best possible band score. If you need to study or work where English is the language of communication, the IELTS exam is used as evidence of language ability. IELTS scores are recognised by universities and colleges, employers, immigration authorities and professional bodies. Each individual course is a highly intensive programme and provides a clear understanding of all four parts of the IELTS exam. There will be an emphasis on the requirements within each part of the test, focusing on question types, how to avoid common errors and tips to deal with the demands of the exam.

Pre-University English Programme
A four month combination course which covers both Academic English and IELTS test preparation designed for students targeting IELTS band 4.5-6.5. Students will study for 20 hours per week with 5 hours of optional assessed self-study each week. T he course offers a bridge from general English to English for Academic Purposes by developing skills needed for academic study and continuing professional development at university or college, both at home and overseas. Aimed at post-secondary students, the courses include vocabulary development, extensive reading and listening skills, academic writing and development of speaking and presentation skills. International Foundation Programme - 2, 3, 4 month programmes
The International Foundation Programme offers a bridge from general English to English for Academic Purposes by developing skills needed for academic study at university or college. Aimed at post-secondary students, the course includes vocabulary development, extensive reading and listening skills, academic writing and development of speaking and presentation skills linked with key areas assessed in the IELTS exam. The course also focus on information literacy, research, problem solving and critical thinking. Vocabulary will be delivered via IELTS linked themes and global issues with an emphasis on projects and a language portfolio. Academic English courses offer a bridge from general English to English for Academic Purposes by developing skills needed for academic study and continuing professional development (CPD) at university or college, both at home and overseas.
Students will become autonomous learners, be self-aware and reflective and encouraged to work collaboratively in teams and partnerships. The main aim is to improve their language level and overall academic skills, which can be transferred successfully to their next place of academic study. All students will initially undertake an IELTS mock exam, with exam style questions integrated throughout the programme leading to an Academic IELTS exam taken at our onsite official IELTS Test Centre.

Recognizing this, SERC has developed Business English programmes to address your specific business English needs.
Industry Specific English Courses
Industry Specific English is a course for employees in a variety of industries such as Agriculture, Engineering, Aerospace and Hotel and Catering. It is aimed at students who have a basic grasp of English, but who need to use technical and industry-specific vocabulary in the workplace, in meetings and presentations.

Intensive English Summer Course - 2, 3, 4 week programmes
The Intensive English course is perfect for students studying general English language and communication skills. You will enhance your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation are integrated into the course with content and topics relevant to your language ability. You will learn a range of study skills to ensure you have the skills needed for long-term learning.
Intensive Academic English Summer Course - 2, 3, 4 week programmes
The Academic English Summer course is designed for students preparing to study at university, college and within further education at under-graduate level. Aimed at post-secondary and post-graduate students, the courses include vocabulary development, extensive reading and listening skills, academic writing and development of speaking and presentation skills.
The courses also focus on information literacy, research, problem solving and critical thinking. Vocabulary will be delivered via themes and global issues, with an emphasis on projects and a language portfolio. Students will become autonomous learners, be self-aware and reflective and will be encouraged to work collaboratively in teams and partnerships. The main aim is to improve your language level and overall academic skills which can be transferred successfully to your next place of academic study.

Each individual course is a highly intensive programme, focusing on all of the main skills that are required in the IELTS exam, including exam familiarisation and strategies, language skills and academic vocabulary development. As part of the course, you will do regular examination practice tests and receive feedback and advice to develop your skills further.
