The Lake School of English in Oxford was established in 1978 and welcomes adults of all abilities and nationalities, who have many different reasons for studying English.
The Lake School is an independent school which is owned by its 2 directors: Susan Barber and Carmel Engin.
Susan is Academic and Financial Director, Carmel is responsible for Marketing, Business Development and Student Services. Both are highly qualified English language teachers and experienced teacher trainers, who are involved in all administrative and operational aspects of managing the school.
The school is situated in the centre of the historic city of Oxford, close to shops, cafes, theatres, bus and train stations, as well as the famous Oxford University colleges.
1. Semi-Intensive General English: On this course, you study every morning from 9.15 until 1pm, so you are free to take a part-time job* or follow your own personal interests in the afternoon. Weekly cultural, social and sporting activities are also included in your course.
Between September and June you can start almost every Monday and enrol for a minimum of 2 weeks. You can't take a Semi-Intensive Course in July or August.Short courses are between 2 and 9 weeks. If you want to follow a Semi-Intensive General English course for 10 weeks or more, go to long stay programmes.
2. Intensive General English: On this Intensive course you study every morning and 3 afternoons per week: 21 hours of lessons, in total. Some weekly cultural, social and sporting activities are also included in your course.

Students on short courses are placed in classes according to their level and so may join existing classes. Our highly qualified and experienced teachers make sure this integration is smooth to provide a friendly, positive classroom atmosphere for all students.

You take a combination of general English and exam preparation to create your own personal study programme. Exam preparation is available for all students who are Pre-Intermediate or above. Exam preparation is subject to availability.
Your English language course will include grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and communication skills. We provide support and encourage learner independence so that you can confidently approach living and studying in an English-speaking environment. Your exam preparation will include training for IELTS and/or Cambridge Examinations. We will help you make your exam registration. You are responsible for your exam fees.
