About IH Lisbon

H Lisbon, set up in 1963, is one of the founding schools of the IH World Organisation. It occupies an independent building in a mixed commercial and residential area of Lisbon, just a walk away from Edward VII Park, the Gulbenkian Foundation and Gardens and the Corte Inglés. Apart from English, it teaches French, German, Spanish and Portuguese as a Foreign language. In addition it has a vibrant teacher training department with all-year round CELTA courses and part-time DELTA and IHCYLT courses. As from January 2012 it will also be offering online CELTA courses.

General Portuguese

Class Sizes: Medium, 6-10 students, Small, 2-5 students, One-to-One

Super Intensive Group Courses
(Maximum number of students: 8)
The prime aim of these courses is to improve the student's communicative skiils. In other words, the underlying emphasis in classroom activities is the development of the student's ability to speak and understand spoken Portuguese. For this reason, students are given plenty of opportunities to practice the language they are likely to need outside classroom.
For groups with four or more students:
Courses run five hours per day (25 hours a week).
For groups fewer than four students:
Courses run four hours per day (20 hours a week).


Small Group Intensive Courses
(Maximum number of students: 8)

The prime aim of these courses is to improve the student's communicative skills. In other words, the underlying emphasis in classroom activities is the development of the student's ability to speak and understand spoken Portuguese. For this reason, students are given plenty of opportunities to practice the language they are likely to need outside classroom.
For groups with four or more students:
Courses run three hours per day (15 hours a week).
For groups fewer than four students:
Courses run two hours per day (10 hours a week)


Portuguese Home Tutoring
These highly successful courses are ideal for people who are extremely motivated and wish to progress rapidly in the language, and would like the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Portuguese culture.


Small Group Non-Intensive Courses
(Maximum number of students: 12)
These courses are aimed at expatriates working or studying in Lisbon who have a practical need of Portuguese for professional, academic and social reasons.
Courses run three hours a week (1,5 hours twice a week) or two hours a week (2 hours once a week), for a whole trimester. These are afternoon/evening courses.


One-to-one Courses

The aim of these courses is to develop a firm grasp of the structure of Portuguese with an emphasis on spoken forms. Classes cover all aspects of the Portuguese language (oral and written communication, grammar and vocabulary). They are designed to "top up" the knowledge, which a student may already have, and are ideal for students who wish to make progress in a short period of time. The courses can be individual or in small closed groups of up to 4 students, and can begin on any agreed date.

Preparation for CAPLE exams
These courses will run throughout the academic year (October to June).
Classes will take place twice a week and will have a duration of two and a half hours. These courses will run after working hours.

Summer Group Courses for Young Adults

These courses are ideal for young adults who wish to have the first contact with the language and the culture. 15 hours of tuition per week, plus accommodation with a family and 5 cultural visits a week will enable the student to have a good grasp of the language as well as of the culture.
