About Dominion English Schools Auckland

IN 2019 DOMINION ENGLISH SCHOOLS celebrates its 50th year in education. Our school is located in Auckland, in the heart of the city. We offer separate programmes for Teens (14 - 17 for individuals, 12 - 17 in accompanied groups), Seniors (18+) and for 50+ students. Our school runs around 180 - 160 maximum students...large enough to offer full facilities and variety of programmes, small enough to make everyone your friend. We specialise in Cambridge and IELTS exams, General English and Holiday programmes, Teacher training. Extensive weekend excursions and our NZ studies give students a good chance to learn and see more of NZ. Homestays are our most popular choice of accommodation but we arrange several well priced alternatives. General courses start any Monday. Dominion only closes on public holidays otherwise is open all year round. Teen programmes are in December/January/February/March and June/July/August.

Our General English courses are designed to help you communicate accurately and fluently, and you can start any Monday of the year.

Morning classes focus on grammar and vocabulary input using internationally-recognised course books such as New Headway and Cutting Edge. The first class every afternoon is topic-based and helps to improve your communication skills. The final hour of the day is dedicated to speaking, focusing on improving pronunciation, accuracy and fluency. On Friday afternoons you can choose from a range of options such as vocabulary workshops, watching and discussing films, or enjoying structured speaking tasks across levels with our friendly teaching staff. We also run a number of Friday options aimed at supporting students who are looking for work such as CV writing workshops.

At Dominion, we welcome students of all ages. Over the years we have had many students aged 40-70 years old integrating comfortably into our adult programmes.

We take extra care of our mature students to ensure their stay in New Zealand is as pleasurable as possible.

Social Outings

We organise regular lunch outings during the school week exclusively for mature students. These social gatherings allow mature students to get together and enjoy one of Auckland’s many delicious restaurants.
Mature Homestays
We place mature students in homestays without young children so that they can relax and unwind after a hard day’s study.


Teenage School: Super-Intensive English

Our Super-Intensive programme is a great choice for teenagers who want to learn a lot, as quickly as possible.

On our Super-Intensive course, you study General English in the mornings and attend structured project lessons in the afternoons. The afternoon programme allows you to improve your English skills and cultural awareness based around a number of New Zealand themed topics. There is a new project topic each week and a weekly afternoon excursion related to the topic.

Hours: 25 hours of English a week in class (9.00am-3.30pm), including one afternoon excursion per week.
Course Length: minimum 2 weeks (topics run on an 8 week cycle). This course can also be combined with our Teenage English Plus Activities course.

English Exam Preparation

This course is for students aged: 16-70

Our exam preparation courses are an excellent way to study for an internationally recognised English qualification such as Cambridge FCE, CAE & CPE, IELTS and TOEIC.

You will study full-time with one of our highly qualified and experienced teachers in a multi-lingual class of up to 15 students. There is no better way to prepare for that all important English qualification.

Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE)

FCE is a general English exam course designed to help you improve in all areas of your general English. The focus is on building language and skills, as well as providing you with the necessary strategies required in the FCE exam. This is one of our most popular courses and is widely accepted by employers as proof of your English language competence in day-to-day situations. It is approximately equivalent to IELTS 6 and TOEFL 500-550. After completing an FCE course at Dominion, you have the option of taking the internationally recognised Cambridge FCE exam at a local exam centre.

Entry Level: upper intermediate+
Course Length: 12 weeks (March, September), 9 weeks (January)
Class Size: maximum 12
Hours: 25 hours a week in class (9.00am-3.30pm)

Cambridge Advanced English (CAE)

CAE is an extension of FCE and is designed to help you improve your general English to an advanced level. The course also focuses on the necessary skills and strategies required for the CAE exam. This prestigious qualification is widely accepted by employers and is especially popular with candidates needing to use English in the workplace. CAE is approximately equivalent to IELTS 7 and TOEFL 550-600. After completing a CAE course at Dominion, you have the option of taking the internationally recognised Cambridge exam at a local exam centre.
Entry Level: advanced

Cambridge Proficiency English (CPE)

CPE extends from CAE and is designed to help you improve all areas of your general English to proficiency level. The course also focuses on the necessary skills and strategies required for the CPE exam. This high level qualification is widely accepted by universities around the world as proof of English language competence. It is also accepted in some non-English speaking countries as a qualification to teach English as a second language. After completing a CPE course at Dominion, you have the option of taking the internationally recognised Cambridge CPE exam at a local exam centre.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

IELTS is an academic English course designed to help you improve your English skills and strategies. It is an excellent course if you want to enter into university or a vocational programme and it helps you improve all areas of your academic English. After completing an IELTS course at Dominion, you have the option of taking the internationally recognised IELTS exam at a local exam centre.

Business English

Business English courses

Business English is a part-time afternoon programme designed to help students help you communicate accurately and fluently in a business context. Reading and listening texts use business contexts so that new business vocabulary is introduced naturally. Speaking and writing tasks also focus on communication in a business context.
Levels: pre-intermediate +
Course Length: 6 weeks
Class Size: maximum 15, average 11
Entry Requirements: Entrance test
Hours: 12.5 hours a week in class (12.45pm-3.30pm)

TOEIC: Test of English for International Communication

TOEIC is a business English course designed to help you improve all areas of your Business English. Especially popular in Asian countries, TOEIC is the benchmark of English language competence for many employers in Japan and Korea. The language systems and skills studied on the course will help you cope in a business environment. Dominion English Schools, Auckland is a private TOEIC testing centre, meaning that students who study TOEIC at Dominion can take the exam at the school any day by agreement.

Learn to be an English Teacher in New Zealand!

Our teacher training department is renowned for quality and innovation. Our teacher trainers are experienced and well-respected within the industry, and provide all our in-house teacher training programmes. The trainers give our TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) / TECSOL (Teaching English to Child Speakers of Other Languages) courses and conduct training on behalf of other schools and organisations. Whether you want to teach adults or children, we can provide you with the training and tools you need to become the best teacher possible.

Teaching English to Child Speakers of other Languages (TECSOL)

The Dominion TECSOL course is offered to non-native speakers of English who would like to learn the fundamental concepts of teaching English to children 3-12 years of age.

Course content:

Language teaching methodology: focus on teaching techniques to develop child learners’ language and skills.
Child psychology & language development: learn the importance of knowing what child learners are like and what stage they are at as they grow.
Peer teaching practice: practise teaching techniques in the group with comprehensive feedback from your tutor.
Practicum at Primary School or Kindergarten: experience teaching and learning in a typical setting.
Language development: improve your own language skills by focusing on what English sentences to use in the classroom for instructions, praise, routines and classroom management situations.
Phonics: focus on the sounds to spelling relationship to support students in their pronunciation.
Materials and activities for teaching children: analyse teaching resources and how activities to use in future lessons.
Entry Requirements: pass the Dominion TECSOL entry test or IELTS level 5.
Course Length: 4 weeks
Class Size: maximum 12
Hours: 35 hours per week (30 hours in class plus 5 hours supervised self study)
Exam: conducted at school at the end of the course


Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

The Dominion TESOL course is designed for non-native speakers of English who would like to learn how to teach English to young adults and adult learners. The course provides you with all the vital training and techniques to become a successful language teacher. It also prepares you to take the Cambridge TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test).

Course Contents

Language teaching methodology: focus on teaching techniques to develop learners’ language and skills.
Background to language learning: analyse learning styles and learner characteristics and needs.
Peer teaching practice: practise teaching techniques in the group with feedback from your tutor.
Language development: learn how to analyse and describe English text. Improve your own language skills.
Teacher observation: watch experienced teachers in action.
English teaching materials: analyse available teaching resources and how to use them.
Cambridge TKT: prepare for the TKT. Taking the test is optional, but recommended as TKT is internationally recognised.
Entry Requirements: pass the Dominion TESOL entry test or minimum IELTS level 5.
Course Length: 4 weeks
Class Size: maximum 12
Hours: 25 hours per week (9.00am-3.30pm)
Exam: TKT examination is held at a local Auckland test centre 1-2 weeks after the course ends

Fun and fully-supervised, our teenage school programmes are the ideal way to spend the holidays or to prepare for high school entry.

Our holiday programmes are either full-time English (Super Intensive) or part-time English combined with our extremely popular activities programme (English Plus Activities). Our High School COMBI programmes are designed to suit each individual student, and they allow you to combine English language preparation at our school with time in a real New Zealand high school. On all our programmes we provide total immersion in an ENGLISH ONLY school.

Our teenage school programmes are designed especially for students aged 12-17 years old. Students enrolled in any of our teenage school programmes can enjoy:
