DELF and DALF French language exams

 

DELF (Diplôme d’études en langue française – Diploma in French Studies) and DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française – Diploma in Advanced French) are certifications of French language skills for non-native speakers of French. These exams are administered by the French Ministry of Education.

DELF is formed of four independent tests which correspond to CEFR levels of A1, A2, B1 and B2. DELF is aimed at beginners and intermediate users of French. DALF has two levels which correspond to levels C1 and C2 of CEFR and is aimed at advanced speakers of the language.

Take note that these diplomas are not accepted by the French government as a certification of the level of French when applying for French citizenship.

 

DELF exam format

DELF has four parts – listening, reading, writing and speaking. The first three are taken together and speaking is taken separately. Depending on the level (A1-B2) listening lasts for 20-30 minutes, there are 2 or more recordings and they are played once or twice. You must fill out some comprehension questions related to the recording. In the reading section of the exam there are several text followed by various comprehension questions (written, multiple choice, true or false, etc.). The length of the texts vary depending on the level. Part three requires you to write a piece of text, depending on the level the difficulty and length of the texts differ. The topics can include daily life, giving information, expressing a personal viewpoint and more. Speaking for the first two levels consists of a guided conversation, exchange of information and role-play with the examiner, level B1 includes a guided conversation, an interactive exercise and a discussion and level B2 requires you to present and defend your opinion.

 

DALF exam format

DALF C1 has four parts – listening, reading, writing and speaking. In listening there will be a long recording and a couple short ones and you will be required to answer questionnaires related to them. Reading involves answering questions to a long text (journalistic or literary). In the writing section you will be required to summarize a couple written text and write an essay. In speaking you will need to make a presentation based on written documents and write an essay on the contents of the document. DALF C2 has two parts listening and speaking, and comprehension and writing. In the first one you are required to write down the contents of a recording, make a speech about the problem mentioned in the recording and have a debate with the examiners. Part two requires you to write a structured text based on a couple documents.
