Prepare for DELE

DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera – Certificate of Spanish as a foreign language) is the only official international Spanish exam attested by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport. The exam is organized by Instituto Cervantes and designed by Universidad de Salamanca. There are six levels of DELE exams – A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 – with the last one indicating mastery in Spanish.

DELE test format

The test format differs a little bit for each level, however they all test four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. There are mainly multiple-choice questions, fill-in-the-blanks, matching, true or false and essay questions.

Choose the right level

You have to decide which level to take. Don’t get too ambitious, if you don’t pass you won’t get a certificate of the lower level. If you want to make sure you are registering for the test on the right level take this classification test provided by Instituto Cervantes.

Choose your method

How are you planning on preparing for DELE? If you want to study on your own you can use books recommended for DELE preparation, learn online (see resources below) or find a language school (check out these schools teaching Spanish and preparing for DELE).

Use unconventional learning resources

Combine using traditional learning resources with unconventional ones. This will not only help you prepare better but will keep things interesting for you and if you plan on learning for a few months steering away from boredom is important! Consider using online resources, reading articles online or novels, listening to podcasts or radio and using language apps.

Have a learning plan

Include your learning sessions in your schedule. Plan them out for a few months so you have enough time to prepare and master the level you are aiming for. Don’t plan on learning every day, having a rest day will make the knowledge stick.

DELE Reading

Make sure to underline important ideas in this part of the test, this will help you understand the purpose of the text. Start with reading the questions so you know what to look for. When you prepare read different kinds of texts so you will feel prepared for different options.

DELE Listening

Take notes during this section and make sure to write down the most important points and keywords. Don’t overthink the true or false questions and don’t overthink in general. Go with your first instinct. Prepare for listening by choosing various materials to listen to.

DELE Writing

When you write keep the meaning of the sentence clear and don’t make the sentences too long. Try not to think in your native language but in Spanish. Use level appropriate vocabulary and connecting expressions. Always proofread after you are done and double check your spelling.

DELE Speaking

Slow down and breathe. You don’t have to speak fast to show you are advanced, you do how ever need to speak clearly and make sense. Use comparative words and show your knowledge of appropriate vocabulary.
