TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language and measures your ability to understand and use the English language at university level. The test is available in two forms: IBT (internet-based test) and PBT (paper-based test). However the paper-based format is available only where the internet-based one is not.  Over 30 million people have taken this test to prove their knowledge of English. TOEFL is recognized by 9000 institutions in 130 countries (including USA, UK, Canada and Australia).

TOEFL tips

Go all in

If you really want to pass TOEFL be prepared to give it your all. During your preparation period try to target each section everyday – listen to a little radio, read an article online, speak to a friend from another country or write them a letter such consistency will allow you to feel more confident with your English.

Improve your vocabulary

Learn new vocabulary and practice it extensively. It’s best to use new words in sentences, it will help you to easily remember their meaning and in addition you will actually know how to use the new words. Revise new words a couple of times in weekly intervals to make sure they stick.

Internet Based Test

Remember the test is now mainly computer based. It’s only available in paper format in places where the IBT is not available. Be prepared to use a QWERTY keyboard during the test and practice on such a keyboard before taking the exam.

General tips

Always read the instructions and questions carefully. Practice for the test in timed conditions and learn to manage your time.

Practice speaking

Don’t underestimate the speaking part of the exam. Speak clearly and in a calm manner, use advanced vocabulary, but don’t force it. Above all structure your responses! You have to know how to manage time and how to keep your thoughts organized. Remember you will be speaking into a microphone; practice this situation to feel more comfortable in it. Record yourself and check your pronunciation, accent, intonation.

Be smart with listening

Be aware that all standard varieties of the English language can be heard in this section and in different types of speech, so prepare by listening to interviews, lectures, conversations and news on YouTube or TV to get accustomed to different accents and types of speech. One statement will be spoken with an Australian or British accent so be prepared. When preparing for this part of the test practice note taking as it is allowed and can help you a lot.

Prepare for reading

Remember that this test is aimed at students wanting to study abroad or in an English-speaking country at a university level so the texts that you are going to be reading are academic and feature academic vocabulary. Try to figure out the purpose or main idea behind each paragraph – that’s what the questions are going to be aimed at.

Be creative with writing

Make sure to structure your essay – start with a clear introduction, use paragraphs and finish strong with a conclusion underlining your main points. Don’t use words from the instructions! Paraphrase or try to put it in your own words. Make sure you really understand the instructions and give detailed examples to support your statements and opinions. Be aware of time and don’t try to write too much. Practice writing within the given limit.
