TOEFL

What is it?

TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language and measures your ability to understand and use the English language at university level. The test is available in two forms: IBT (internet-based test) and PBT (paper-based test). However the paper-based format is available only where the internet-based one is not.  Over 30 million people have taken this test to prove their knowledge of English. TOEFL is recognized by 9000 institutions in 130 countries (including USA, UK, Canada and Australia).

For whom?

The TOEFL test is for you if you’d like to study abroad in an English-speaking country or in a country where subjects are taught in English, if you are a candidate for a scholarship or certification, if you are a student or worker applying for visas. There are more than 50 test dates per year and it is available in more locations than any other English language test.

What does it involve?

TOEFL verifies how well you combine skills such as reading, listening, speaking and writing. You can score from 0 to 30 points in each section for a total of 120 points. The duration of the exam amounts to about 4 hours. The exam allows note taking and the questions are mostly multiple choice questions. The reading part requires reading 3-5 pieces of text (20 minutes for each) and answering multiple choice questions. For the listening part there will be 40 – 60 minutes of listening material and again you will be asked to answer multiple choice questions. In the writing part you will be given two written tasks – an essay and a response to a topic from the reading section and a lecture. The speaking part requires answering six questions into a microphone (about 20 minutes), you answers are later sent to an examiner.
