Prepare for FCE – tips and resources

Passing the FCE exam confirms the knowledge of English at a higher intermediate level. This means that you are able to use the language in speech and writing in everyday life, at work and in education. Passing this exam may help you get the job of your dreams or get into college of your choice. FCE is accepted in most institutions in the world. Find out more about FCE here. Below you will find some tips about preparing for the FCE exam as well as resources to use.

TIPS

Set a date for your exam and plan your preparation

Register for the FCE exam and mark the date in your calendar. Think how many days you have left until the exam to prepare and divide the workload accordingly. Remember to include off days and consider your other engagements. You can only really prepare and be ready for the exam if you are dedicated to the process and make it your priority.

Choose your materials

Find resources which best suit your needs. There are a lot of options you can use like online resources (which you will find below), books (there are over 1500 books to choose from on amazon.com) or if you prefer a more comprehensive approach you could enroll in a language school. These schools offer exam preparation.

Different approach to each section

Remember that the exam consists of 5 parts: reading, writing, use of English, listening and speaking. Each of the parts requires a different approach to preparing. While reading and use of English as well as listening (to some extent) can be thoroughly practiced and verified independently, the other parts can be more demanding. With speaking try to develop your vocabulary, learn new words using flashcards and revise them as often as you can. If you have a learning buddy practice speaking with them. When it comes to writing read about different types of texts and what they should include, double check your grammar and spelling. When preparing for listening check out interviews and news on YouTube or TV to get accustomed to different accents and types of speech.
