I’d tried for years to learn Chinese, but is wasn’t until I found Silk Mandarin that I am finding success. Silvia quickly responded to my inquiry and helped me to understand the methodologies used and many options available to me. She listened to my personal experiences, helping me to create goals that Amelie Laoshi eagerly tackles. As a veteran educator, I clearly understand learning styles and modalities. I feel fortunate for the HSK Standard textbooks, visuals, auditory resources and technology available to me in pursuit of my goals. I’m especially grateful for Amelie’s patience and humor, which motivate and inspire me to continue to learn and grow in my acquisition of the Chinese language. I would highly recommend this program, regardless of age or level.

Refreshing approach and environment for learning Chinese

I studied Chinese on and off over the span of nearly 10 years in both University and private tutoring environments, but I never was able to fully connect with traditional course tracks and teachers. Frustrated with my language level and growth after having lived in China for years, I was referred a few months ago to Silk Mandarin by a friend and have found this to be a truly unique school from day one.

My teacher Jasmine developed an approach and schedule tailored to what I need, even going beyond the HSK curriculum to include custom valuable segments relevant to my career needs. I have learned faster than I expected, and more importantly I am perpetually more and more motivated by the progress and results.

I had always written off learning characters as I thought they were too daunting to learn comprehensively given my busy schedule, and instead prioritized conversational skills and pinyin. Silk Mandarin, however, has a way of teaching characters that makes it feel easy and logical, and it has completely changed how quickly I can learn comprehend and retain information.

The school is in a great central location too, comfortable, and after moving to the new classrooms on the 16th floor the environment got even better. Positive vibes, I highly recommend.

Great Course!

Silk Mandarin's teachers makes the anxiety of learning a stressful language and transforms it with there personality to ease the pressure. Their patience to break down complicated words helps students to continue to grow, while their enthusiasm helps to keep us motivated. The flexibility to utilize the facilities, as well as, the online platform makes it easier to navigate classes during a business work schedule. I would highly recommend Silk Mandarin and my teacher Lis to anyone!

A thoughtful approach to Chinese learning

Silk Mandarin offers a welcoming environment to develop Chinese language skills regardless of level or ability. While you definitely get out what you are willing to put into the course, dedicated students will find that Silk implements a system for learning that, with practice, establishes a solid foundation for students to become increasingly self-reliant and confident with their Chinese. It has been a privilege to take lessons from Jasmine, who is clearly invested in her students and their growth.

Great experience!

I had so much fun and learned a lot of Chinese. It was great seeing Shanghai and meeting new people. I wanted to learn Chinese in a immersive experience and this program helped me do that.

Excellent Teachers

I went to Silk Mandarin with the specific goal of passing HSK 6, the one on one classes organized by Silk Mandarin and my teacher Liwen were excellent. After sitting down and going through a mock test together during our first session Liwen identified the areas where I needed to improve and focus the most. In subsequent sessions we focused on these areas and Liwen taught me strategies that helped me save time and score better.

Ive taken lots of Chinese classes at different universities and in different private settings and can honestly say that Silk Mandarin was the best. They understood my own specific goals and were able to provide the roadmap and materials necessary to achieve that goal in only 4 lessons.

A Great Choice!

I have been in China for over five years, and for more than five years, I have attempted to learn Mandarin. During my time in Shanghai, I have tried countless tutors to apps and other language centers. I had all but given up hope that I would find an approach that worked for me, then a friend referred me to Silk mandarin.

For me, What sets Silk apart from a sea of money-hungry Chinese language training centers is their passion. From the moment you step through the door, you will be by a wave of warmth, caring, and sincerity. Before joining Silk, I had become burnt out and demotivated from my previous experience at my last Chinese language school. So many of the other programs in Shanghai advertise high tech resources and unrealistic results; this is not the case at Silk. I also found that the course consultants at other centers only care if you make it to the class, not about your actual goals. The point that makes Silk Mandarin tower above the rest is their genuine care. My course consultant Lina has taken such good care of me from the word go. I will be the first to admit; I am not an easy customer to please. Coming from a high stakes sales background, I am never shy when it comes to pushing for what I want or deserve. With Lina, the whole process was clear, consistent, and straightforward. She went above and beyond to make sure that I was satisfied with every aspect of my investment.

Another point that stood out to me about Silk was their teacher and staff retention. The majority of their team has worked in the center for over two years. Having worked in management for an English training center, I can speak firsthand to the difference that retaining teachers and staff makes to the learner experience. No matter the language or the business, you can always tell the quality of the product and the culture based on their ability to maintain their staff and their customer base.

They say that a great team starts with a great leader and I couldn’t agree more! The center director Liwen is a shining example of a leader who cares deeply for her team and her students. After speaking with her in detail about my goals and ambitions, We made a personalized study plan to ensure that I reached my full potential. She also took a personal interest in me as a student to ensure that I was matched with the correct teacher to ensure a cohesive learning experience. Her work ethic shines through in her staff and study material. I could not be happier with my decision to join Silk Mandarin and am excited to see the progress I can make!

You won't regret it

If you actually want to learn Chinese, study at Silk Mandarin. It’s not the cheapest, but that is because the quality is the best you’re going to be able to find, especially if you’re a beginner. Here are my two main reasons why Silk is worth it: 1. Class Size - The group classes have a limit at 6 students, so you’re guaranteed to get tons of personal attention from your teacher and have the opportunity to speak a lot, which is what you actually need if you’re going to improve, especially at the early levels. 2. Teachers- The teachers here are the best. I had Jessica for HSK 1, Christina and Jessica for HSK 2, Jessica for HSK 3, and now David and Jessica for HSK 4. Christina is a boss. She don’t mess around and she makes grammar so easy to understand. Jessica is my savior, my fearless leader, my tug boat, pulling me along even when I have no gas left. She explains things so clearly that you don’t think you’re learning until you look back a few chapters and realize that you understand everything. Seriously, a teacher goddess. David is my newest teacher and is perfect for my HSK 4 needs and desires. His English is so goddamn good, which is really helpful mainly because he can explain the nuances between similar words that a textbook can’t (really, the textbook sucks at this). This is very useful for me at the higher level now that my vocabulary is a little bigger (ex. Think about the difference between “but, although, actually, even though, even if, etc... “). He also has a decent sense of humor.

So yea, if you want to pretend to learn Chinese, buy some textbooks and “study” at Starbucks or go to a school where you’re listening to a teacher with 15 other students in the class and you never have a chance to speak. But, if you really want to learn Chinese rapidly, try Silk Mandarin out. I started mid HSK 1 in October (I had taken a single Chinese course two years before in America), and now 5 and half months (April) later I am mid-HSK 4 and a few months away from being conversationally fluent. I am so thankful I found this school and would recommend it wholeheartedly.

Silk Mandarin is by far the best Chinese training institute in Shanghai. I recommend it to everyone with complete confidence.

I studied some Chinese in high school and with a private tutor in the US, but Christina's class helped me learn better and faster than anything else I've tried. Silk Mandarin's entire teaching staff is professional, fun and well equipped to give outstanding lessons.

I have taken both private and group lessons. In both I was appropriately challenged to speak and understand at a high level. The intensive classes can be tough, but you're given all the support and resources you'll need to succeed. I now feel confident to use Chinese at work and in daily life.

At school, everyone is friendly and encouraging. I'm always warmly greeted when I walk in for class and encouraged to show of everything I've learned. In class, we've had a lot of fun with role-plays and other activities that have helped me dramatically improve my speaking ability. The extra activities the school puts on, such as the Christmas party, make me feel like I'm a part of a supportive community of expats who all want to learn to speak Chinese.

All in all, I highly recommend Silk Mandarin to anyone who wants to learn Chinese, either for fun, for work, or for intensive study. You can surely find an incredible program to suit your needs here!
